BOYAN-D3
George Spragins, Palmetto PC Club
Justin Boyan has released his fourth publicly-released version of the "BOYAN"
communications program. Version D2's trouble in ANSI Graphics mode and several
other minor bugs with external protocols have been fixed.
BOYAN's commands are mnemonic and easy to learn. New or experienced users of
other communications programs will be able to get BOYAN up and running
effectively by reading the on-line help screens. The on-line help screens are
available at any time by pressing <Ctrl-Home>. However, the most detailed and
complete information is in the (sixty plus pages) documentation file.
If you are converting from another communications program, you may use Steven
Linhart's CVTFON program to translate ProComm, Qmodem, or other phone directory
into BOYAN's format.
BOYAN is a powerful communications package for the IBM-PC. Its flexibility,
speed, and ease of use make BOYAN ideal for all PCers that use a modem. Here
is a partial list of BOYAN's features:
- supports interrupt driven communications with practically all modems.
- context sensitive help screens anytime with the <Ctrl-Home> key
combination.
- "Back up" or cancel the current action anytime with the <Esc> key.
- reliable file transfers with a wide variety of internal protocols.
- many additional protocols can be configured into BOYAN.
- "automatic filename entry" means you don't type a filename twice.
- upload messages prepared off-line.
- determines the line prompt character and handles awkward "word wraps".
- extensive script language with over 100 commands automate all
communication needs. Scripts are modular and recursive.
- status line displays the current host system, elapsed time of the call,
and the script file in control.
- maintains a "usage log" that records the time of all connections and the
efficiency of file transfers.
- shell to issue a DOS command, run a program, or enter DOS temporarily.
- built-in file manager to scan directories, copy and view files.
- dialing directory maintains names, numbers, parameters, default file
transfer protocols, logon scripts, and the last date connected for 200
systems.
- editing, sorting by name or number, and printing the directory list.
- a 20 number "redialing queue" stores the numbers dialed but failed to
connect.
- "scroll-back buffer" uses available memory for recalling prior screens.
- "gossip mode" allows clear on-line conversation between two users.
- exclusive "backspace editor" to correct errors without retyping erased
words. Text can be inserted or deleted on a line at any time.
- ANSI emulation, configurable filter tables, screen dumps, disk logging,
printer logging, modem speed-detection, modem parameters, and other
options make BOYAN superior for microcomputer communications.
BOYAN provides dozens of configurable options for great flexibility and power.
Most of these options are suitable in their preset (default) values. However,
a built-in configuration program makes BOYAN easy to customize. Any changes
are automatically stored on disk to be used the next time the program is run.
The program provides built-in support for the ASCII, Xmodem, Relaxed-Xmodem,
CRC-Xmodem, Ymodem, and G-option Ymodem methods of file transmission. BOYAN
will support Kermit, Zmodem, Sealink, Megalink, and other protocol methods by
"shelling" to external programs.
BOYAN makes it simple to make connections through an auto-dialing modem. When
you press <Alt-D>, you are shown the "DIAL:" prompt. You may now 1) enter a
full phone number to dial manually, 2) enter a dialing code number between 1
and 200 to dial a system from the directory, or 3) press <Return> to access the
dialing directory. The access to the directory will allow you to:
- <PgUp>, <PgDn>: page through the directory.
- <E>dit: enter a new entry or edit an existing entry.
- <L>ocate: scan the dialing directory for certain entries.
- <A>lphabetize: sort a range of entries by name or phone number.
- <D>elete: delete an entry or range of entries.
- <S>wap: exchange any two entries.
- <P>rint: print a formatted range of the directory.
- <F>ile: files a formatted range of the directory to disk.
The directory is saved to disk after any changes, so be sure that you do not
remove the disk containing BOYAN.FON during the modification process.
BOYAN has the unique feature of being able to determine the name of the file
you wish to transfer based on what you have told the remote computer. All
other known communications programs require you to type the full filename
twice.
If you write a message using a word processor, SideKick, or ASCII text editor,
BOYAN will upload it as if you had typed the message directly. The program
provides a degree of convenience in message uploading not found in any other
communications program:
it determines the remote system's line prompt,
it will add a space to blank lines to avoid a false end of message signal,
and the "Auto-Detect Word Wrap" feature will tailor your prepared messages
to the system's maximum line length.
BOYAN does not have terminal emulation, a host mode or unnecessary code, just
straight forward well written code.
I initially wrote my own specialized communications program, but changed to the
original PC-TALK for its flexibility features. When the author was no longer
available and many versions appeared, to the point of confusion, I selected
QMODEM as a stable, speedy author supported package. BOYAN's features have now
given me a reason to once again consider my choice of a communications program.
In my opinion BOYAN is the most impressive of the available communications
packages, Shareware or commercial.
